New Zealand Cricket CEO Justin Vaughan has struck out at the behaviour of some NZ rugby fans at the Bledisloe Cup match in Melbourne last week. He has used it to generalise about NZ rugby fans, drinking & even youth culture at large. As for the mention of xenophobia by NZ fans in Australia - you must be joking! This guy has obviously spent too much time sipping chardonnay & eating canapes from the comfort of numerous corporate boxes.
First of all you can see the sort of behaviour he highlights from a minority at virtually any sporting event in the world. Try watching a cricket ODI wearing NZ colours from Bay 13 at the MCG. How about the behaviour of English soccer fans towards their own team & Algerian fans during their soccer world cup match (and they weren't even considered hooligans)? The list goes on & on.
Sure the mixture of booze & patriotism can lead to a few fans going over the top but that is often just venting in the heat of the moment. Most will then gladly mix with opposition fans after the match. Would he rather they sat there all passionless like the "Prawn sandwich brigade" Roy Keane once talked about at Old Trafford.
Justin - you really need to be concentrating on your own patch rather than pointing the finger at fans who have paid good money to follow the All Blacks. Aren't you the guy who effectively ruled NZ's only fast bowler out of international cricket for 3 years because you couldn't stand up to the BCCI? Aren't you the guy who has given in to player power & talks about player burnout yet allows them to play in whatever T20 tournament they like round the world. Aren't you the guy who still gives Jacob Oram a contract every year?
Justin - get back behind your stumps & concentrate on not being a Kamran Akmal.

O the Irony
While Justin Vaughan was lecturing New Zealand rugby fans on their behaviour he was giving the Pieman yet another "last chance" after another boozy incident in a motel in Christchurch.
As I said Justin - concentrate on your own patch.
