First of all a few quick comments on last week's test. While I thought Carter was offside for the AB's first try for the next 30 minutes until half time they played some of the best rugby I have seen in quite a while. You got the feeling from the moment you first saw them coming out of the shed that they had a determination but also a confidence about them that they were going to let loose on this Aussie team.
And so it proved. Amongst all the uproar about yellow cards & Drew Mitchell in particular this week people seemed to have forgotten that the All Blacks also scored when they were down a man to Australia. They denied Aussie the ball & just had too much pace & skill for them (eg Brad Thorn distributing like a midfield back in the build up to 2 tries). To rack up 32 points & four tries by half time was outstanding. McCaw had another outstanding game & his try showed that his ball carrying has gone to a new level.
Once the changes started coming in the 2nd half the All Blacks performance was always going to dip. Also with Drew Mitchell sent off they knew there was no chance of Aussie winning the game (not that there had been since the 12th minute). Aussie showed some admirable desire to compete in the 2nd half with 14 men but the All Blacks had simply taken their foot off the pedal.
So only one enforced change for the All Blacks but three for the Aussies with Kurtly Beale at fullback as Ashley-Cooper moves to centre for the injured Horne. Anthony Faingaa takes over at 2nd five from Barnes & his twin Saia Faingaa takes Moore's hooking spot.
They obviously want to bulk up their midfield which was a concern I pointed out last week. Still Barnes provided another playmaking option so it all now falls on Giteau's shoulders. I would have thought they would want Moore's experience but Robbie Deans seems determined to give lots of players their chance as he supposedly doesn't care about results this year.
I think the Aussies will have a better share of possession this week but doubt they will be able to do much with it. The All Blacks must once again concentrate on shutting Will Genia down. I can't see the Aussies lifting their confidence after 8 defeats in a row & being able to match the power & pace of the All Blacks' current style. Its not like they have a dominant tight five with which they can deny the All Blacks ball. They also need their loose forward trio to step up after being over shadowed last week (why does Elsom always play so much better against the Japies?)
Sideshow has gone for a 13 point margin & I am inclinded to agree. Tight first half with the All Blacks moving away in the 2nd half much like many of the recent Bledisloe tests we have seen.
All Blacks by 15 points.
