What did we learn from New Plymouth?

As New Zealanders we need no reminding how keen Wayne Barnes is to pull a card from his pocket & send someone from the field.  Though to be fair to him Jamie Heaslip & Ronan O'Gara left him with little choice.

Unfortunately, as much as we all like to see the All Blacks romp to victory, the Irish indiscipline meant this test was over as a meaningful contest after 15 minutes & eventually turned into a scrappy affair that won't mean much in the great history of NZ rugby.

So what can we take from it .....

  • With the Boks & the Aussies also winning comfortably (apart from the Dingo scrum) how meaningful are these June tests at the end of a long European season?

  • As previously stated here Israel Dagg is the real deal & Mils will be very anxious to make a return from injury before Daggy Boy makes the number 15 jersey his own.

  • Conrad Smith remains a class act who makes very few mistakes.

  • By picking debutants with form & a couple of seasons of solid experience they won't let you down.

  • Subs for the sake of subs only leads to a disjointed structure & loss of cohesion.  While it was understandable on this occasion to blood a few guys it also showed it can be dangerous tactic.

  • How can Ireland still pick Ronan O'Gara?  Missed touch from penalty kicks twice in the first half, sin binning for a professional foul, missed tackles - you name it he did it.

  • I can't recall a top international side falling off as many tackles as Ireland did in the first half of the test - has Paddy lost his ticker?

  • On missed tackles - why when Kieran Read misses a tackle no one in NZ mentions it but when Liam Messam misses one it's headline news?

So overall the All Blacks did as much as could be expected of them though they will have highlighted defense (especially around the ruck) as an area to improve on.

Let's see if Wales have more to offer though the way they blew a 16-3 lead against a virtual South Africa B side at home I'm not expecting them to break their 57 year hoodoo.
